Russia making ‘incremental advantage’ in south of Ukraine, using ‘brutal, barbaric techniques’: Lloyd Austin

Washington: US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said on Saturday that Russia’s troops continue to make “incremental gains” in the south of Ukraine and have used “brutal, barbaric techniques” along the way to target civilians.

During a joint press conference with Bulgarian Prime Minister Kirill Petkov in Sofia, Lloyd Austin said, “In terms of the Russians’ progress in the South, I would say they continue to make incremental gains. I would also say that they Some have used brutal, barbaric techniques in the context of the way they are targeting civilian populations.”

He continued, “And then, we would hope that they (Russia) would choose a different path. It is difficult to see the pain the citizens have endured.”

A report by CNN Mason Clark, principal Russia analyst at the Institute for the Study of War, says Russian troops have made progress in Ukraine’s south using a “rebuke from the Syria playbook” strategy.

Tactics include “specific neighborhood-by-neighborhood targeting,” less precise weapons that take a more brutal toll, and kill civilian infrastructure, Clarke was informed of as saying.

Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine on 24 February after President Putin announced a “special military operation”.
