New Delhi: External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Wednesday held talks with his visiting Belarusian counterpart Vladimir Makei, who arrived here during the day on his two-day visit to India.

The meeting discussed several topics, such as bilateral economic relations, the conflict in Ukraine and multilateral cooperation.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Vladimir Makei will participate in the program in Delhi on November 10, 2022. He will return to Belarus on November 11, 2022.

“Met FM Vladimir Makei of Belarus who is in India for our Intergovernmental Commission meeting. Our discussion covered bilateral economic relations, Ukraine conflict and multilateral cooperation,” Jaishankar tweeted.

India’s relations with Belarus have traditionally been warm and cordial. India was one of the first countries to recognize Belarus as an independent country in 1991. Formal diplomatic relations were established and India’s diplomatic mission was opened in Minsk in 1992, and Belarus opened its mission in New Delhi in 1998, reports news agency ANI.

Cooperation between the countries can be seen in many multilateral forums, such as the UN Security Council (UNSC) and the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG). Belarus was one of the countries whose support helped bolster India’s candidacy for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council in July 2020.

The two countries enjoy a comprehensive partnership and have established mechanisms to exchange views on bilateral, regional and multilateral issues through the Foreign Office Consultations (FOC), the Intergovernmental Commission (IGC) and the Joint Committee on Military Technical Cooperation, the report added.

Both countries have signed several agreements/memorandums of understanding on various subjects including trade and economic cooperation, culture, education, media and sports, tourism, science and technology, agriculture, textiles, avoidance of double taxation, promotion and protection of investments, and defense and technical cooperation .
