SC rejects PIL seeking national holiday on Netaji’s birth anniversary

New Delhi: A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking direction to declare Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose’s birth anniversary as a national holiday was dismissed in the Supreme Court.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud and Justice JB Pardiwala refused to entertain the plea saying it is in the hands of the Indian government to decide.

“The best way to celebrate his contribution is by working hard just as he worked hard for independence,” the CJI told the lawyer.

Slamming the lawyer for filing the suit, the apex court said, “You are making a mockery of PIL jurisdiction. At least think what the court can do. I am looking at the recent spate of such petitions. What will the Court do Supreme? Take the jurisdiction of the court seriously. You are also a lawyer.”

The PIL was filed by advocate KK Ramesh seeking a direction to declare January 23, the birth anniversary of Subhash Chandra Bose, as a national holiday.
