SDMC shuts meat shops amid 9-day Navratri celebrations

New Delhi: South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) on Monday announced to close meat shops under its jurisdiction during the 9-day period of Navratri festival  ‘in view of public sentiments’. The order will continue from April 2 till April 11.

“Keeping in view the sentiments of the public, necessary directions may be issued to officers concerned to take action for the closure of meat shops during the 9-day period of Navratri festival from 2nd April to 11th April,” said Mukkesh Suryaan, Mayor of SDMC.

Suryaan said, ” During Navratri, 99 percent of households in Delhi do not even use garlic and onion, so we’ve decided that no meat shops will be open in South MCD; the decision will be implemented from tomorrow.  Fine will be imposed on violators.”

SDMC Mayor informed about issuing the meat shops licenses by agreeing on same condition in the future. He said, “We will also issue licenses with this condition in the future. I’ve also written to the CM to withdraw their discount on alcohol during Navratri, & if possible, stop the sale of liquor for 9 days too.”
