New Delhi: Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan has been elected as the new President of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), the official WAM news agency of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) reported on Saturday.

The Federal Supreme Council convened today to elect the president, who will hold office for a five-year term before being eligible for re-election. According to the Khaleej Times report, the new chairman was chosen from among the members of the Federal Supreme Council.

According to reports, Sheikh Mohamed has also served as the Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces since January 2005. He is known for playing a key role in developing the UAE Armed Forces in terms of strategic planning, training, organisational structure and promotion of defence.

Under his leadership, the UAE Armed Forces has emerged as a leading institution widely praised by international military organizations. The rulers of the seven sheikhs of the United Arab Emirates made the decision in a meeting.

Zayed has been elected President of the UAE succeeding Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, who died on Friday at the age of 73 after a prolonged illness. The Ministry of Presidential Affairs announced that in the UAE mourning the passing of the former President 40 days of official mourning will be observed with the flag flying at half-mast and ministries and official institutions at the federal and local levels and in the private sector will be closed for three days.
