New Delhi: Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav broke Shikhar Dhawan’s record for most T20I runs in a calendar year for the Indian cricket team during the first T20I of the three-game series against South Africa on Wednesday (September 28) in Thiruvananthapuram.

Before the game started, Yadav needed just eight more runs to break Dhawan’s T20I record. However, the 32-year-old achieved the milestone with a six on the ball from pacemaker Anrich Nortje.

SKY went 50 runs with 33 balls unbeaten, including five fours and three sixes. On a pitch where other batsmen from both the Indian and South African teams were struggling to score a few runs, he smashed the ball into the stands.

Suryakumar Yadav – Best T20I Run Scorer

Currently, Yadav is the highest run scorer in 2022 in the T20I format. He has played 21 games and has 732 runs for a 40.66 aggregate while scoring a century and four-half centuries. On the other hand, Dhawan had previously held that record by scoring 689 runs in 2018. The highest total of T20I runs in a calendar year was held by Pakistani batsman Mohammad Rizwan with 1,326 runs in 29 games last year.

In the game against South Africa, India didn’t start well as they pursued the 106 goal when Indian skipper Rohit Sharma went for a duck. Virat Kohli also managed only three out of nine balls. On the power play, India recorded just 17/1, their lowest result in the six-over stage. However, KL Rahul (51 not out) also opened up his hands in cooperation with Yadav and played more responsibly.

Speaking about Suryakumar, he made his international debut in 2021 after a good season in the Indian Premier League. He is one of the top T20I hitters and is affectionately known as India’s Mr. 360 due to his ability to hit a variety of shots. He’s great with his wrist work, ability to hit the ball all over the field and find the gaps.

Yadav is in great form and we will see how he continues in the upcoming games. Yadav has performed well as number 4, but he often mentions that he feels comfortable with every number.
