WeGame mobile shuts down in September

For the uninitiated, WeGame is a platform similar to Steam. It lists mobiles and is a Chinese alternative to Steam. The platform debuted in 2017 and now has over 200 million registered users.

Earlier this year, WeGame attempted to reach a global audience as Steam forayed into the Chinese market. However, it seems that the global rollout of the platform has not been successful and it turns out that the company is now ceasing operation of the app.

As reported by the South China Morning Post, WeGame mobile is expected to cease operations from September 8.

The company reveals that it is planning “changes in business development strategy”. As a precondition, the platform is no longer accepting new user registrations, which means you cannot login at this time. Users will no longer be able to download the app from July 15.

All functions of the WeGame mobile will be transferred to the PC version of the application, which should remain operational.

The move comes shortly after the company shut down its Penguin Esports platform. Penguin Esports was again a knockoff of Twitch offering gamers to stream games on the platform.

Previously, a merger of two live streaming services (Huya and Douyu) was to take place. The combined market share of the two companies could have reached 90% in China. Tencent Games’ Penguin Esports was to go under the merger company Huya and Douya.

However, China’s financial regulator blocked the merger due to antitrust concerns. This was believed to be the reason for the shutdown of Penguin Esports, however, the company gave the same reason it now gives for WeGame’s shutdown, i.e. “due to changes in the business development strategy.
