New Delhi: As part of global job cuts imposed by the new owner of Twitter, Elon Musk, to achieve economies of scale and make the $44 billion acquisition sustainable, the social media platform has begun laying off employees in India.

Twitter’s CEO, Parag Agrawal, as well as its chief financial officer and a few other top employees were fired by the world’s richest businessman, Elon Musk, last week for starting his tenure there.

Senior management left shortly thereafter. Musk has now begun a major effort to reduce the company’s overall headcount.

“The layoffs have begun. Some of my colleagues have received an email notification regarding this matter,” a Twitter India employee told PTI on condition of anonymity.

Another source claimed that “a large part” of the India team has been affected by the layoffs.

Full information regarding business losses was not immediately accessible. Twitter India did not respond to email inquiries.

“In an effort to put Twitter on a healthy track, we will go through the difficult process of reducing our global workforce on Friday,” the US-based social media platform said, in an internal email to employees earlier.

“Each person will receive an individual email,” she said. For the security of its employees, Twitter systems and customer data, the company will temporarily close all of its sites.

“If you are in an office or on your way to an office, please go home,” Twitter said.

In the email, the company banned employees from disclosing sensitive company information on social media, with the press, or in any other way, despite the fact that Twitter has gone through several rounds with the law on the right to free speech.
