Udit Raj of Congress must apologize to President Murmu: NCW

New Delhi: Congress leader Udit Raj landed in trouble on Thursday for his ‘Chamchagiri’ remarks against President Murmu, leading to an intervention by the National Commission for Women (NCW).

NCW president Rekha Sharma slammed Udit Raj for his statement citing “derogatory and insulting” and also asked him to apologize to the president.

On Wednesday, the Congress leader had tweeted, “No country should have a president like Draupadi Murmu ji. Chamchagiri also has its limits. It is said that 70% people eat Gujarat salt. If you live life eating come out yourself, you’ll know.”

Following this, Udit Raj has been severely criticized by several Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, including Sambit Patra, who accused the Congress of having an “anti-tribal mindset”.

Meanwhile, the Congress leader clarified that the statement represents his personal views which do not belong to the Congress.

He wrote on Twitter, “My statement is personal of Draupadi Murmu ji, not of Congress party. They nominated Murmu ji and asked for votes in the name of Adivasi. Isn’t she an Adivasi after becoming president?”

“If she is the president of the country, she is also the representative of the tribals. It hurts when people go to office in the name of SC/ST and then keep quiet,” added Udit Raj.
