New DelhiThe University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a warning notice to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and EdTech companies offering Online and Open Distance Learning (ODL) programs under a franchise arrangement.
It has been observed by the Commission that some edtech companies are claiming to offer Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and online programs without permission in collaboration with UGC recognized institutes and universities.
“It has recently come to the notice of UGC that some EdTech companies are advertising in newspapers/social media/television etc. to conduct degree and diploma programs in ODL/online mode in association with certain universities/institutions recognized/entitled Introducing UGC. Such franchise arrangement is not permitted and action will be taken against defaulting edtech companies as well as HEIs under applicable laws/rules/regulations,” the UGC said.
“Institutions of Higher Learning (HELS) recognized/declared by the UGC for offering ODL and/or online programs in accordance with the UGC (Open and Distance Learning Programs and Online Programs) Regulations, 2020 and its amendments.”
As per the rules, higher education institutions cannot offer these programs in the name of UGC. Students enrolling for a UGC recognized course in any institute or university will have to cross-check the UGC website at deb.ugc.ac.in.
