UK Secretary thanks India for ‘very high level representation’ at Queen’s funeral


London: British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly expressed his gratitude for the “very high-level” representation of Indian President Droupadi Murmu at the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II, PTI news agency reports.

Speaking on the sidelines of a high-level session of the UN General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, Cleverly told the news agency: “I would like to say a huge thank you for the very high level representation that India sent to Her Majesty The Queen’s funeral. I had the opportunity to meet President Murmu and it really got noticed.”

President Murmu attended the state funeral of Queen Elizabeth II at Westminster Abbey in London on Monday morning.

Cleverly, the UK Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs under the new government of Prime Minister Liz Truss also met his Indian counterpart, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, on the sidelines of the UNGA late Wednesday night, the report said.

The former Head of State of the United Kingdom and Head of the Commonwealth of Nations passed away on September 8 at the age of 96.

World leaders attending the funeral were: US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, Italian President Sergio Mattarellaand, Irish Taoiseach Micheal Martin, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
