Kiev (Ukraine): A couple got married in Ukraine just hours after Russia launched an invasion of their country. Two Ukrainian nationals – Yarina Eriva and Svyatoslav Fursin – spent their first days as a married couple collecting rifles and getting ready to defend the nation.

Both Areva and Fursin have signed contracts with the Territorial Defense Forces, an arm of Ukraine’s armed forces, which consists mostly of volunteers, CNN reported.

Once armed, the couple went directly to the office of their political party – European Solidarity.

“Right now, we’re here and we’re doing everything we can. So, there’s a lot of work to do, but still, I hope everything goes well,” Ariva said.

He noted that some civilians who are not part of the defense force were also given rifles.

“There are some places where you can get them, and you just sign the papers, and you can go and defend your country. That’s the situation right now,” she said.

Local media reported Friday that several explosions were heard in the Ukrainian capital as Russia entered the second day of a special military operation.

On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin recognized separate regions of Ukraine – Donetsk and Luhansk – as independent entities. Later, Putin ordered special military operations to “protect” the people in the Donbass region. Several countries, including the UK, US, Canada and the European Union, have condemned Russia’s military operations and imposed sanctions on Moscow.

Amidst the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, many airlines including Air India are operating special flights to bring back Indian citizens safely. Amidst the tension in the country, more flights are going to be operated from Ukraine (Kiev) in the coming days for Indian citizens.
