Ukraine crisis: US issues new sanctions on Belarus President, his wife

New York: The United States on Tuesday imposed new sanctions on Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, who has aligned with Russia in its war in Ukraine.

Several other Russians, including a Russian judge, were also targeted with sanctions for human rights abuses, according to the US Treasury Department.

Sanctions have also been imposed on Lukashenko along with his wife Helena. They would block their assets and interests in the United States and prevent Americans from engaging in transactions with them.

“Today’s designations demonstrate that the United States will continue to deliver concrete and significant consequences for those who engage in corruption or gross human rights violations,” said Andrea Gacci, director of the Office of Foreign Assets Control.

“We condemn Russia’s attacks on humanitarian corridors in Ukraine and call on Russia to stop its unprovoked and brutal war against Ukraine,” Gaki said.

In December, the US imposed sanctions on members of Lukashenko’s family following a migrant crisis at Belarus’ border with Poland, leading to allegations of human rights abuses.

Previously, the US has targeted Belarus with sanctions for its involvement in the Russian invasion of Ukraine, including expanding export control policies to Belarus and preventing the diversion of technology and software into Russia through the country.
