Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], October 15 (ANI): Sex workers in Kolkata’s Sonagachi, which is said to be Asia’s largest red-light area, played debi boron, sindoor and danced dhunuchi on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami on Friday.
Celebrating Durga Puja here for sex workers is like winning a protracted battle as they were not allowed to conduct puja earlier. It was only in 2013 when sex workers of the Darbar Mahila Samiti approached the Calcutta High Court that granted permission to celebrate Durga Puja.

Speaking to ANI, Vishakha Lashkar, member of Darbar Mahila Samiti, had said, “We have not been given equal rights in the society. Even our children have not been accepted by the society. It seems that we are one. We have come from a different world. It is only because we are sex workers. We work to support our family. But we should also have the right to celebrate festivals.”

“We just want to spread the message that it is just a belief that sex workers should not mix with other people. But we feel that we are a worker though our work is different. Every sex worker should be blessed with Durga. Right to enjoy and celebrate. Worship,” Lashkar said.

According to mythology, on the day of Vijayadashami, Goddess Durga killed the demon deity Mahishasura after a fierce battle that lasted nine days.
Vijaya Dashami is the day that marks Durga Visarjan or the immersion of Durga idols, which marks the journey back to Mount Kailash after a ten-day stay in their parents’ home on earth.

This year Durga Puja has started from Monday, 11 October (Maha Shashti). (ANI)
