WhatsApp Pay India head quits, joins Amazon

New Delhi: News agency Reuters quoted a source as saying that Manesh Mahatme, the head of WhatsApp’s payments business in India, has left the company and is joining Amazon India.

The source said that Mahtme has joined Amazon’s e-commerce division in India as the Director of Product.

According to his LinkedIn profile, Mahatme joined WhatsApp Pay in April 2021 after serving as a director. He was also on the board of Amazon Pay India between 2014 and 2021.

At Amazon, he led a team of senior product, engineering, business development and sales leaders in developing the company’s payments experience on and off Amazon.

The instant messaging app, WhatsApp, is owned by Meta. Its payment service was first launched in India in November 2020.

Earlier, speaking about the challenge of positioning WhatsApp in a segment dominated by players like Paytm and Google Pay, Mahatme had said, “We have a long-term view of India. It is still early days for digital payments in the country. We look forward to making a meaningful contribution to serving existing users as well as adding new users to India’s digital payments ecosystem who are already well connected on WhatsApp.

“The next tranche of digital products needs to be made more accessible and inclusive. We believe payments on WhatsApp can make a significant positive impact,” said Mahatme.
