According to the DGCA, the airline allegedly delayed bringing the incident before its internal committee, besides failing to disclose the incident immediately.
What did the DGCA say?
The punishment came after the aviation authority took cognizance of the incident and sought a report from Air India. “Air India has not reported the incident of a passenger urinating on the blanket of a female passenger. We have sought a report from the airline,” a DGCA official told news agency PTI.
A male passenger was reported to airport security after the Paris-New Delhi Air flight landed at 9.40am. “He was here and did not follow the flight attendant’s instructions and later peed on the blanket of a lady passenger,” airport officials told news agency PTI.
The female traveler who initially filed a written complaint decided not to go to the police, so airport security released the accused.
“Air India confirms that on December 6, 2022, a passenger on Air India flight 142 from Paris to Delhi defecated on the empty seat and blanket of a fellow passenger while the latter was in the lavatory. The crew identified and isolated the perpetrator and reported the incident to the authorities,” the airline said, confirming the incident.
Another related case
This was the second fine levied against the airline after the aviation regulator fined Air India Rs 30 crore for another incident in which other passengers urinated on a flight from New York to New Delhi. The penalty was imposed because post-incident procedures were not followed. The pilot of the flight was suspended by the DGCA for three months because he did not perform his duties and did not maintain order and safety.
