According to Variety, “Outlander” executive producer and showrunner Matthew B. Roberts is engaged to write and executive produce the prequel. A writers’ room is currently being assembled for work to begin in the coming weeks. As for what the prequel will focus on, the exact plot details are being kept under wraps. Ronald D. Moore, who developed
Outlander, for television, will also executive produce with Marill Davis under their Tall Ship Productions banner. Like ‘Outlander’, Sony Pictures Television will also be a studio. Roberts is currently under an overall deal at Sony.
“Outlander” is based on the ongoing novel series of the same name by Diana Gabaldon. Gabaldon teased in a recent Facebook post that she’s still working on a prequel novel about Ellen McKenzie and Brian Fraser, the parents of “Outlander” main character Jamie Fraser.
