Number of Indian students in US to jump 19 percent in 2021-2022, says US government data

New Delhi: The number of Indian students in American universities has increased by 19 percent over the previous year, and nearly 21 percent of the more than one million foreign students are Indian students, according to a US government report.

According to the annual Open Doors report on international students released on Monday, 1,99,182 students of Indian origin enrolled in higher education in the US in 2021-2022, up from 1,67,582 in 2020-21. 96,654 Indian students enrolled in higher education in the US in 2012–2013.

With 82,000 visas issued in June-August, the highest number of any country, the number of Indian students immigrating to the US is expected to surpass that of China in 2022-2023.

According to Don Heflin, consular counselor at the US Embassy in New Delhi, 62,000 student visas were issued in 2021-2022.

China, on the other hand, lagged behind India because it was more difficult for Chinese students to get a visa due to Covid travel restrictions and strict quarantine regulations. Heflin claimed that only 50,000 of the approximately 110,000 to 120,000 visas issued to Chinese students were still valid.

According to a 2021-2022 report by the non-profit Institute of International Education (IIE) under the US State Department, China and India accounted for 52 percent of all international students studying in the United States.

The number of Chinese students pursuing higher education in the United States fell from 3,17,299 in 2020-21 to 2,90,086 in 2021-22, down nine percent from the previous round.

Ten years ago, there were 2,35,597 Chinese college students in the United States. India’s population growth followed the decline caused by the epidemic years.

The number of Indian students in US universities decreased by 4.4% and 13.2% in 2018-19 and 2019-20 and in 2019-20 and 2020-21, respectively.

According to Heflin, graduate students were primarily responsible for the 19 percent increase in Indian students studying in America. According to a US Embassy representative, most Indian students choose mathematics and computer science, engineering and business, and management.

Overall, from 9.14 lakh in 2020-21 and 9.48 lakh in 2021-22, more foreign students are enrolling in higher education in the US.
