Atiq Ahmed’s youngest son Abaan Ahmed dies in Jhansi accident

Abaan Ahmed, the youngest son of former gangster-politician Atiq Ahmed, was killed on Thursday after the SUV in which he was travelling crashed into a divider in Jhansi district of Uttar Pradesh.

According to police, another occupant of the vehicle, identified as Sonu, also died in the accident, while three others sustained injuries and were taken for treatment. Initial information suggests the vehicle was travelling at high speed when the crash occurred. Authorities are investigating the exact circumstances that led to the accident. Several reports said Abaan was travelling towards Jhansi to meet his jailed brother when the accident took place.

Who was Abaan Ahmed?

The Atiq Ahmed son Abaan Ahmed was the youngest among Atiq Ahmed’s five sons. Unlike some of his elder brothers, Abaan had largely remained away from the national spotlight for most of his life.

His name, however, often surfaced because of the legal troubles and controversies surrounding his family. His death has once again drawn attention to the series of incidents that have affected the Ahmed family over the past few years.

Atiq Ahmed: A brief history

Atiq Ahmed was one of Uttar Pradesh’s most well-known gangster-politicians. Beginning his political career in the late 1980s, he was elected multiple times as an MLA from Allahabad West and later served as a Member of Parliament from Phulpur.

Alongside his political career, he faced numerous criminal cases over several decades, including allegations related to murder, kidnapping, extortion and organised crime. In March 2023, he was convicted in the Umesh Pal kidnapping case.

In April 2023, just days after his son Asad Ahmed was killed in an encounter by the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force, Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead while being escorted by police in Prayagraj. The killing, which occurred in front of television cameras, drew nationwide attention.

A family that has remained in the spotlight

The Ahmed family has repeatedly made headlines due to criminal investigations, court proceedings and several high-profile incidents.

Among Atiq Ahmed’s five sons:

  • Umar Ahmed is lodged in Lucknow jail.
  • Ali Ahmed is currently lodged in Jhansi jail.
  • Asad Ahmed was killed in a police encounter in April 2023.
  • Ahzam Ahmed remains out on bail, according to publicly available reports.
  • Abaan Ahmed, the youngest son, died in the Jhansi road accident on Thursday.

Investigation underway

According to reports, police have registered the case and begun investigating the cause of the accident. Officials are examining the vehicle and gathering evidence from the crash site to determine how the SUV lost control.

As of now, authorities have not announced any evidence suggesting foul play in the Atiq Ahmed son Abaan Ahmed case, and the investigation remains ongoing.
