From detention to five demands: Rahul Gandhi turns up heat on Centre over CJP protest; Here’s How

The Leader of the Opposition joined the political battle over the CJP protest, raising five demands before the Centre after the Delhi crackdown on student demonstrators.

Rahul Gandhi CJP protest

A day after clashes during the CJP-led protest in Delhi, Rahul Gandhi led a demonstration near the Prime Minister’s residence, accusing the Centre of ignoring students’ concerns while urging immediate action on five key demands.

The Rahul Gandhi CJP protest took a fresh political turn on Tuesday as the Leader of the Opposition staged a protest near Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in New Delhi, a day after clashes during the CJP-led “Sansad Chalo” march. Gandhi alleged that the government had failed to address students’ concerns and questioned the police action taken against protesters.

The protest ended with Rahul Gandhi and several Opposition leaders being detained by Delhi Police before being released later. The developments have intensified the political debate surrounding the ongoing agitation led by the CJP over alleged irregularities in competitive examinations and broader education reforms.

Rahul Gandhi lists five demands before the Centre

Addressing reporters and sharing his stand on social media, Rahul Gandhi outlined five demands that he said were necessary to restore students’ trust in the education system.

The demands include:

  • A discussion in Parliament on the recent police action against protesters.
  • Accountability for those responsible for the alleged use of force.
  • A judicial inquiry into the incidents surrounding the Delhi protest.
  • Concrete steps to reform the examination system and ensure transparency.
  • A direct response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the concerns raised by students.

Protest follows clashes during CJP’s ‘Sansad Chalo’ march

The latest political developments came after violence broke out during the CJP’s march towards Parliament. Protesters and security personnel clashed near barricades as police attempted to stop demonstrators from advancing.

According to official reports, dozens of protesters and more than 100 security personnel sustained injuries during the confrontation. Delhi Police have registered cases and initiated an investigation into the incident.

Congress extends support to protesting students

Rahul Gandhi said the Opposition was standing with students who were demanding accountability over alleged examination irregularities. He accused the government of avoiding a parliamentary discussion on the issue and said students deserved answers instead of police action.

The Congress leader maintained that the protest was intended to highlight public concerns regarding the examination system and called for meaningful dialogue between the government and students.

Government defends its response

Responding to the Rahul Gandhi CJP protest, the Centre maintained that it was willing to engage in discussions and said senior ministers had reached out to Congress leaders during the demonstration. However, the government criticised Rahul Gandhi’s protest, arguing that it continued despite efforts to initiate dialogue.

Government representatives also said several measures had already been taken to address examination-related concerns, including investigations into alleged irregularities and legal action in previous cases.

CJP protest remains at the centre of national debate

The Rahul Gandhi CJP protest has added a significant political dimension to the ongoing agitation, which has continued to draw support from student groups and civil society organisations. The protest movement has centred on demands for greater transparency in public examinations, accountability for recent controversies and reforms in the education system.

With Parliament in session and political parties taking contrasting positions, the issue is expected to remain in focus over the coming days.
