India completes 2,843-km dedicated freight corridor network as PM Modi inaugurates final sections

India’s freight railway network has reached a major milestone with the full commissioning of the 2,843-km Dedicated Freight Corridor. The latest 326-km Western DFC sections connect important industrial and port locations, while the network already handles an average of more than 443 freight trains every day.

The completion of India’s Dedicated Freight Corridor network strengthens the rail freight backbone linking major industrial centres, northern markets and western ports.  

India has completed the full operationalisation of its 2,843-km Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) network, marking the completion of the country’s two major dedicated freight routes.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 8 dedicated three remaining sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) to the nation in Vadodara, Gujarat. The newly commissioned sections cover 326 route kilometres and were developed at a cost of more than ₹20,700 crore.

According to the government, the new sections provide direct connectivity with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA), helping facilitate faster movement of export-import cargo while strengthening links between industrial centres and ports.

With their commissioning, the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors together form a fully operational 2,843-km dedicated freight network.

What is India’s 2,843-km Dedicated Freight Corridor network?

India’s existing DFC network consists of two major corridors designed specifically for freight movement.

The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC) covers 1,337 km between Ludhiana and Sonnagar, while the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) extends for 1,506 km between Jawaharlal Nehru Port Terminal and Dadri.

The Ministry of Railways has confirmed that work on both corridors has been completed and commissioned. More than 443 freight trains are operated on the DFC network on an average each day.

The dedicated infrastructure also allows freight traffic to be diverted from conventional railway routes, creating additional paths for other goods and coaching services.

Which three Western DFC sections were completed?

The latest phase covers three important sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor:

  • Sanand (North) to Makarpura
  • New Umbergaon to New Saphale
  • New Saphale to JNPT

Together, the sections cover 326 route kilometres and were developed at a cost exceeding ₹20,700 crore.

Their commissioning provides direct connectivity with the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority. The government expects the new links to facilitate faster EXIM cargo movement, improve connectivity between industrial centres and ports, reduce logistics costs and help decongest Mumbai’s railway network.

Prime Minister Modi also flagged off freight train services from New Sanand (North), New Makarpura, New Umbergaon and New JNPT as part of the programme.

How does the Dedicated Freight Corridor improve freight movement?

The DFC network separates a substantial part of freight movement from conventional railway routes. This allows freight trains to use infrastructure developed specifically for cargo movement while creating additional capacity on the wider railway network.

The Ministry of Railways says the corridors have resulted in faster transit times, higher throughput and improved operational performance. The network also supports double-stack container operations, particularly on the Western DFC, as well as higher-axle-load freight trains.

The government has also reported higher average speeds, faster turnaround and improved reliability on the commissioned corridors.

These changes are significant for freight-intensive sectors because the DFC network can support the movement of larger cargo volumes while reducing dependence on conventional routes that also carry passenger and other services.

PM Modi’s message on the DFC milestone

During the Vadodara event, Prime Minister Modi described the completion of the more than 2,800-km Dedicated Freight Corridor as a historic achievement for 21st-century India. He also linked faster connectivity with the country’s wider development objectives.

The Prime Minister has previously described dedicated freight infrastructure as important for agriculture, industry, exports and business, while emphasising the role of modern railway infrastructure in building a more efficient transport system.

What does the DFC mean for India’s logistics network?

The completion of the network is closely linked with India’s wider efforts to improve logistics efficiency.

The government says the DFCs have helped lower overall logistics costs, improve supply-chain efficiency and strengthen the competitiveness of Indian industries. Their connectivity with ports and industrial centres also supports the movement of container, coal and bulk cargo.

The benefits extend beyond the railway tracks. Efficient freight movement also depends on terminals, industrial linkages, ports and other modes of transport. The government has therefore been developing multimodal connectivity alongside dedicated freight infrastructure.

The newly completed WDFC sections are particularly important for western port connectivity because the final links provide direct access towards JNPA and help improve the movement of EXIM cargo.

Indian Railways records record freight loading

The completion of the DFC network comes as Indian Railways continues to report growth in cargo transportation.

Indian Railways carried a record 1,670 million tonnes of freight during 2025-26, registering a 3.25% increase over the previous year, according to the Ministry of Railways.

The growth was supported by higher transportation of commodities including fertilisers, pig iron and finished steel, iron ore and cement. The Railways also reported a 4.56% increase in the number of wagons handled during the year.

The figures underline the growing requirement for dedicated infrastructure as India’s freight volumes continue to expand.

What comes after the existing DFC network?

The completion of the 2,843-km network does not mark the end of India’s freight corridor plans.

The Union Budget 2026 announced a new Dedicated Freight Corridor connecting Dankuni in West Bengal with Surat in Gujarat. The proposed corridor is planned as a new east-west freight link and is expected to integrate with the existing Western DFC.

The Ministry of Railways has said that work on preparing or updating the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the proposed corridor has been taken up. Therefore, the Dankuni-Surat corridor should currently be treated as a proposed project rather than part of the operational 2,843-km network.

The government has separately described the proposed Dankuni-Surat corridor as a 2,052-km route connecting major eastern and western industrial regions.

Why the 2,843-km DFC milestone matters

The completion of the Eastern and Western Dedicated Freight Corridors gives India a fully operational dedicated rail network for large-scale freight movement.

Its significance lies not only in the number of kilometres completed but also in the additional capacity, faster freight movement and improved port connectivity that the infrastructure provides.

With more than 443 freight trains operating on the DFC network each day on average, the corridors have already become an important part of India’s freight transportation system.

The completion of the final Western DFC sections now connects the dedicated network through to JNPT, strengthening the link between India’s industrial hinterland and western maritime gateways.

The next phase of India’s freight infrastructure development will focus on how effectively existing corridors are utilised and how proposed projects such as the Dankuni-Surat corridor progress from the DPR stage towards implementation.
