Rain Alert Issued in Several States as Monsoon Advances Across India

The IMD has forecast widespread rainfall across several states as the southwest monsoon advances further into India. However, parts of northwest India may continue to experience heatwave conditions in the coming days.

Dark monsoon clouds over India as IMD issues rain alert for multiple states

India is witnessing contrasting weather conditions, with the southwest monsoon continuing its advance into more regions while heatwave-like conditions remain a concern in some northern and northwestern states. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rain alert activity across several parts of the country over the coming days, alongside warnings of continued high temperatures in select areas.

According to the IMD, conditions are becoming favourable for the monsoon to move further into parts of Maharashtra, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and additional areas of Uttar Pradesh during the week.

Heavy rainfall likely in several regions

The weather department has indicated that widespread rainfall is expected over parts of the western coast, including Konkan and Goa, Coastal Karnataka, and Kerala. Some locations in these regions could witness heavy to very heavy rainfall episodes during the week. Northeast India is also likely to receive scattered to widespread rain, with isolated heavy rainfall in states such as Arunachal Pradesh, Assam and Meghalaya.

Rainfall activity is also expected to increase across eastern and central India as the monsoon progresses further inland. The advancing monsoon is expected to bring relief to many areas that have been experiencing prolonged heat and dry weather conditions.

Heatwave conditions not over yet

Despite the advancing monsoon, parts of northwest India may continue to face heat-related conditions. The IMD’s extended forecast suggests a low probability of heatwave conditions in areas of Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh during the coming days. Temperatures in some northern and eastern regions are expected to remain above normal.

Recent forecasts have also indicated that some areas of the country are still dealing with delayed monsoon progress and rainfall deficits, contributing to continued heat stress.

Delhi-NCR may see relief from extreme heat

Weather forecasts indicate that Delhi-NCR could experience intermittent rain and thunderstorm activity over the next few days, helping keep maximum temperatures below the 40-degree Celsius mark.

What the IMD says

The IMD’s latest weather outlook highlights two simultaneous developments: the continued advancement of the southwest monsoon and the possibility of heatwave conditions in select regions. The department has advised residents to stay updated with local forecasts and weather warnings, especially in areas prone to heavy rain, thunderstorms or extreme temperatures.
