IMD heatwave warning in north India during severe summer

IMD heatwave warning Issued as temperatures near 49°C in north India

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of severe heatwave conditions across several parts of north and central India as temperatures continue to rise during the ongoing Nautapa period. As per the latest IMD heatwave warning, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Haryana and Maharashtra are among the states witnessing extremely hot weather over the past few days.

Rajasthan, UP and Delhi among worst-hit states

According to the recent IMD heatwave warning, Rajasthan’s Sri Ganganagar could record temperatures close to 49 degrees Celsius. Several districts in Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra have already crossed the 45-degree mark, increasing concerns over heat-related illnesses.

In Uttar Pradesh, Banda remained one of the hottest places in the country with temperatures reaching around 47.4 degrees Celsius. Cities including Jhansi, Prayagraj, Agra and Hamirpur also experienced scorching daytime conditions. Officials have advised residents to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours unless necessary.

The IMD has also warned about unusually warm nights in some regions, where temperatures may stay high even after sunset. Such conditions can make recovery from daytime heat more difficult, especially for children, elderly people and outdoor workers.

Delhi and the nearby NCR regions are also struggling with intense summer heat. Hot winds and strong sunlight affected normal daily activities in several parts of the capital, while temperatures remained above seasonal averages.

In Maharashtra, the Vidarbha region continues to face extreme heat conditions. Brahmapuri recorded temperatures above 46 degrees Celsius, while cities like Nagpur, Wardha and Chandrapur also witnessed severe heat during the day. Local administrations have urged people to stay hydrated and take precautions against heatstroke.

Relief likely after May 29

The IMD heatwave warning suggests that some relief may arrive after May 29 as parts of north India could witness light rain, thunderstorms and cloudy weather. Meteorologists expect these weather changes to gradually reduce temperatures in some affected areas.
