The Jagannath Rath Yatra 2026 commenced on Thursday with lakhs of devotees gathering in Odisha’s Puri to witness one of India’s largest and most significant religious festivals. The annual chariot procession of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra drew pilgrims from across the country as chants of “Jai Jagannath” echoed along the Grand Road. Authorities deployed extensive security, medical and emergency response teams to manage the large turnout of devotees.
The festival marks the annual journey of the three deities from the Jagannath Temple to the Gundicha Temple aboard elaborately decorated wooden chariots. Leaders extend Safety Update greetings on Jagannath Rath Yatra
President Droupadi Murmu greeted devotees in India and across the world on the occasion, praying for peace, prosperity and the well-being of everyone.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also conveyed his wishes, describing the Rath Yatra as a symbol of humility, devotion and selfless service.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, along with several Union Ministers and political leaders, also extended greetings to the nation, wishing that Lord Jagannath’s blessings bring happiness and harmony to all.
Rescue teams respond as massive crowds gather in Puri
With lakhs of devotees assembling for the procession, Odisha’s emergency response agencies remained on high alert throughout the event. According to officials, rescue personnel successfully assisted and rescued 33 devotees who required emergency help amid the dense crowds. Medical teams, disaster response personnel and volunteers were deployed across key locations to ensure quick assistance whenever required.
Authorities also implemented crowd management measures and monitored the procession continuously to facilitate the smooth movement of devotees.
Celebrations witnessed across several states
Apart from Puri, Jagannath Rath Yatra processions were organised in several cities and towns across the country. Devotees participated in religious processions, bhajan programmes and community celebrations, reflecting the widespread cultural and spiritual significance of the festival.
The annual Rath Yatra remains one of Hinduism’s most revered festivals, symbolising Lord Jagannath’s journey to bless devotees outside the temple premises and reinforcing the values of faith, unity and devotion.
